Become a Volunteer

Pillar Aberdeen provides a range of sessions and groups to people with mental health issues, who can be emotionally and/or socially vulnerable. We have welcomed many volunteers over the past few years to assist us with this service. Volunteers give their time freely, usually about 3 hours/one session each week. Volunteers can either offer their expertise and help for specific things such as Yoga, Reflexology, Fundraising, Board meetings, or provide a welcome extra pair of hands at drop-in sessions.
For whatever reasons volunteers come to Pillar, members benefit from having someone else to talk with and volunteers benefit from a different experience here, and from having a chance to learn more about mental health. We hope that increased awareness helps to break down barriers. Volunteers do not require to have any qualifications, but we are looking for people who are friendly and approachable, who have a real interest in communicating with others, and who are willing to commit regular amounts of time to Pillar.
As a prospective volunteer you are initially asked to visit us to gain a picture of where we are and what we do. If you decide that you are interested you will be asked to provide details of two people who can provide references. Volunteers are subject to enhanced disclosure. Pillar will write to them prior to you becoming a volunteer. We then ask you to come along for a few weeks so that we can get to know each other. At the end of this period we will discuss your role before you make any firm commitment to being a regular volunteer. Pillar welcomes any new volunteers. Please contact us if you are interested.
